How to compress a JPG

  2. Choose a quality level. 75 keeps photos sharp; 60 is the smallest that's still acceptable for the web.

How it works

The image is decoded and re-encoded with MozJPEG, an optimising JPEG encoder that produces noticeably smaller files than a typical "Save As" at the same visible quality.

This only touches compression. To also reduce the pixel dimensions, use the Image Resizer first.

Everything happens in your browser using your device's own processing power. Your images are never uploaded to PrepImages, and nothing is stored after you close the tab.

Frequently asked questions

What quality setting should I use?

75 is a good default that keeps photos looking sharp. Drop to 60 for the smallest files that are still acceptable for the web; stay at 85+ when detail matters.

Can I compress a JPG without resizing it?

Yes. This tool only re-encodes the image at a lower quality; the dimensions stay the same. Use the Image Resizer if you also want smaller dimensions.

Why is my compressed file sometimes larger?

If the original was already heavily compressed, re-encoding at a higher quality can add bytes. The tool flags this so you can keep the original instead.
