How the compression works

JPG and WebP use lossy compression tuned to stay visually identical at the default quality — a modern encoder (MozJPEG) squeezes out 20–30% more than a browser's built-in save.

PNG compression is lossless. It re-packs the file and strips redundant data without changing a single pixel, so transparency and sharp edges are untouched.

If re-encoding would make a file bigger — which happens when the original was already heavily compressed — the tool keeps your original instead.

Which format saves the most

Photographs: JPG or WebP, easily 60–85% smaller than an equivalent PNG. Logos, screenshots and flat graphics: PNG stays lossless and usually wins. WebP is the most efficient overall where the destination supports it.
